C18th engraving of a native of the Duke of Your Islands, New Guinea, sketched by John Hunter on his visit to the islands on the ship Waaksamheyd, a Dutch 300 ton burthen snow that was hired to transport supplies to the colony of New South Wales.

The Duke of York Islands were named in 1767 by Philip Carteret to honour Prince Edward, son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and younger brother of George III of the United Kingdom.
