Description
Map of Cocos Island (Tafahi) and Traitors Island (Niuatoputapu). Both Islands are just north of Tonga. They are better known by the names Boscawen and Keppel given to them by Wallis in 1767, but the Tongan names are Tafahi and Niuatobutabu.
Tafahi and Niuatoputapu were discovered by Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire in 1616. They named Cocos Island because of the abundance of coconut palms and Traitors Island due to the ruse by the natives who appeared peaceful but then attacked.
