Beautiful engraving from Bickham’s most famous work, The Universal Penman. This publication was instrumental in advancing the British Empire interests in trade and banking as it standardised the type of script/font used by the multitude on clerks who wrote up ledgers, leases, bills of trading, invoices, manifests. By having a more standard style all these written documents were much easier to read which greatly expanded the trade economy and its benefits to the Empire.
