Description
Very decorative Terrestial and celestial globes surrounded with a Rocco frame, putti and cartographic tools by Louis Brion De La Tour (fl 1756-1803). On either side are panels of text. Australia is shown joined to New Guinea and the New Hebrides as original made by Nicholas Bellin in 1753. This representation of the Australian landmass significantly influenced the way the continent was depicted in almost all maps produced prior to the publication of James Cook’s discoveries of the east coast in 1773.
