Description

Large untitled watercolour by this little known colonial artist, R. Coulon, of Kilmore, Victoria.

There is an earlier work titled, Kilmore, Victoria by the artist J.W. Lang made in 1856 (see Butler, Printed, Images in Colonial Australia 1801-1901, 2007, p.77, ill.77)., which shows the same view from the same vantage point, and with the same extensive picket and wood post fencing as in our watercolour. In particular, there are two distinctive narrow rows of picket fencing leading towards the large chimney stack at centre right in both pictures. Additionally the two fences in the right foreground, are made of posts with thinner wood rails rather than the picket fencing, and this is the same in both pictures.

Another of the artist’s works is held in the National Library of Australia, titled, Country Schoolhouse and acquired from Deutscher Fine Art, Australian art, colonial to modern, Nov. 1985.
