Description
Fine c.18th portrait of Nicholas Gualtieri, from the painting by Maria Maddalena Gozzi (1718-1782), Italian artist born in Florence to Tommaso Gozzi and married Giuseppe Baldacci. Gozzi was a pupil of Giovanna Fratellini and then of Giovanni Domenico Campiglia, to become a specialist in miniature portraits and pastel drawings.
Niccolo Gualtieri was a Florentine doctor and malacologist who established a fabulous private natural history collection, and catalogued its contents, he is best known for his series of shells; Index Testarum Conchyliorum.
