Description
Scarce pre Cook map of Australia and the Pacific with the tracks of many explorers including, Mendana, Quiros, Roggeveen, Schouten, Tasman and Torres.
The map is a reduced version of Dalrymple’s very rare chart showing Australia and New Zealand according to the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his two voyages in 1742-43. The tracks of Torres through
the strait named after him by Alexander Darymple who in researching manuscripts in the Philippines found evidence of Torres discovery. A number of the early Dutch discoveries of the Australian coat are shown and include; Hartog’s 1616, Houtman’s 1619, Tasman 1642-43, Vladmingh’s 1697.
Published under the supervision of Vaugondy. Pretot was ‘Censeur Royal’ as well as Professor of History at the Royal Academy of Sciences.
