Description

A 1980 facsimile of the 1963 Pergamon Moon Globe.

The information for the globe is based on the photography of Luna 3, the Soviet spacecraft launched in 1959. Luna 3 was the first space probe to photograph another planetary body, and the first mission to photograph the far side of the moon. Two of the twelve gores remain blank, as the spacecraft only photographed approximately 70% of the far side.

The cartouche reads in part: “the map material was prepared by the Central Research Institute of Geodesy, Aerial Photography and Cartography together with the Shternberg State Astronomic Institute of the U.S.S.R.
