Description

Rare lithograph of Alijos Rocks situated in the Mexican state of Baja California, from one of the rarest of all French voyages of discovery.

From San Fancisco which the ship  had left on 14/11/37 Dupetit-Thouars salied for Gaudalupe Island, which he sighted on 17/11/37 and spent the next few days charting. On 22/11/37 he sighted and confirmed the exisitence of the Alijos Rocks situated 300 km off the coast. The rocks seem to be known since the early Spanish history of Mexico and can be found on a map from 1598. The first description is from 1704, by pirate John Clipperton but it was in 1791 that the first exact description was made by the Spanish.

Rare lithograph from the official account by Abel du Dupetit-Thouars, Voyage Autour du Monde sur La Venus 1836-1839.
