Description
Early and lively scene of Sydney Cove (Circular Quay) by colonial artist John Carmichael (1811-1857). Show ships and pleasure craft. On the left is Fort Macquarie demolished in 1903 to make way for tram sheds. Carmichael was a portrait painter, art teacher, engraver and etcher, who emigrated in 1825. He was notable for being deaf and dumb, and one of the earliest free emigrant artists to pursue a lifelong professional career in New South Wales.
