Description

Cook’s discovered the island group of New Caledonia, on 4 September 1774, and which he named New Caledonia. The Resolution remained in New Caledonia 5 to 13 September, 1774. On the 7th September Cook and his party walked into the country. ‘Their houses, or at least most of them, are like Beehives.’ Cook, Journal II, 533-4.
