First edition of this superb Chine-collé lithograph on India paper of Jamestown, Saint Helena by Louis de Sainson artist aboard the famous Dumont D’Urville voyage of scientific discovery and exploration.

In 1815, the British government selected Saint Helena, to send Napoleon Bonaparte to exile He was taken to the island in October 1815. Britain also took the precaution of sending a garrison of soldiers, with an experienced officer (Edward Nicolls), to the uninhabited Ascension Island, which lay between St. Helena and Europe. Napoleon remained at the Briars pavilion on the grounds of the Balcombe family’s home until his permanent residence at Longwood House was completed in December 1815. Napoleon died there on 5 May 1821.
The rare first issue is identified by the name J. Tastu, Editeur at lower left and the embossed stamp at lower sheet edge, ‘Voyage de L’Astrolabe J. Dumont D’Urville Commandant. J.T.’
