Description
First edition of this superb Chine-collé lithograph on India paper of Ascension Island by Louis de Sainson artist aboard the famous Dumon’t D’Urville voyage of scientific discovery and exploration.
The rare first issue is identified by the name J.Tastu, Editeur at lower left and the embossed stamp at lower sheet edge, ‘Voyage de L’Astrolabe J.Dumont D’Urville Commandant. J.T.’
In 1501, the Portuguese navigator João da Nova sighted the island on Ascension Day (which fell on 21 May that year) and named it Ilha da Ascensão after this feast day.
