First edition of this superb Chine-collé lithograph on India paper of a view on the road to Port Louis taken from the State House (Le Réduit). Originally Le Réduit, it was built as a fortress for defence against attack by Pierre Félix Barthelemy David in 1749. Louis de Sainson was the artist aboard the famous Dumon’t D’Urville voyage of scientific discovery and exploration.

The rare first issue is identified by the name J.Tastu, Editeur at lower left and the embossed stamp at lower sheet edge, ‘Voyage de L’Astrolabe J.Dumont D’Urville Commandant. J.T.’
